Ferrari 500 Mondial 0430 MD — Where It All Began

Every racing story has a starting line.

For Gaston Andrey, it began in 1957—not behind the wheel of a Ferrari, but as an SCCA instructor. One of his students, Mike Garber of New Haven, Connecticut, had the passion… but not the pace.

After working to sharpen his skills, Andrey gave him an honest assessment:
“Mike, you just don’t have it.”

But that wasn’t the end—it was the beginning.

Instead of driving, Andrey suggested a different path:
Become an owner. Build something bigger.

Mike asked the obvious question:
“What car should I buy?”

Andrey didn’t hesitate.
“A Ferrari, of course.”

That very weekend, a Ferrari Mondial 0430 MD was sitting at the track. Mike bought it—and in doing so, became Gaston Andrey’s first sponsor.

From that moment, everything changed.

What started as a conversation turned into a partnership that would define an era:
— National Champions in the Mondial
— Entries at the Cuban Grand Prix in Havana
— Multiple runs at the 12 Hours of Sebring
— Competition at the legendary Nassau Speed Week
— Four National Championships together

And fittingly, it all traces back to Lime Rock—
to a building that once housed drivers, still standing today at the entrance to the paddock.

This wasn’t just the purchase of a car.

It was the moment a career—and a legacy—was set in motion.
